About Crux Rock Climbing Gym

The Crux an indoor rock climbing gym, located in Eugene, Oregon, two hours west of Smith Rock, 100 miles south of Portland. We established this site to provide information for climbers interested in climbing at the Crux, in the Pacific Northwest, or--for that matter--anywhere there's a mountain, a big rock, a craggy wall, an eager climber....

The Crux has over 9,000 square feet of climbing walls, including aretes, roofs, overhangs, bouldering caves, lots of low angles, and leadable routes featuring two Entre Prises Imprint Panel Systems and one Entre Prises Imprint Panel bouldering area. We have 30 rope stations, 18 of which are leadable; and three bouldering areas for solo workouts. We also have full weight training, cardiovascular training, and locker and shower room facilities. And when you are finished, we have great Hawaiian teriyaki food and coffee for your pleasure at our Ron's Island Grill.

We at the Crux offer a wide variety of rock climbing lessons for everyone, all ages, novices through experienced climbers. We have an active women's group; lots of children's activities; frequent specials... We also hold clinics on diverse subjects of interest--such as bouldering, lead climbing, and safety and health techniques--for rock climbers and other athletes. (See our Calendar and/or News Page for current goings-on.)

Most importantly, to assure that our climbers have a safe-and-sound climbing adventure at the Crux, our experienced staff frequently performs complete safety inspections. We inspect all anchors, ropes, draws, carbiners, lead bolts, fasteners, and belay devices. Any equipment that does not pass at one hundred percent is immediatly replaced.

As an additional safety feature--and to make everyone's climbing easier--we now use fixed grigris. (For those of you who haven't used one, a grigri is a belay device, made by Petzl, that greatly improves climbing safety because it locks when tension hits the rope.)

And our route-setting is among the best in the nation. Our experienced route-setters set a wide variety of routes so that climbers of all skill levels may enjoy climbing at the Crux; and they frequently change those routes so you have more fun and a greater challenge. Our many beginning and intermediate routes--5.8 to 5.10--plus our complex routes for super-climbers make rock climbing at the Crux accessible to and fun for all climbers.
